When we do it
Service runs late April through mid-May — once the snow is fully gone, the ground has firmed up, and the lawn isn't waterlogged.
Walking on saturated lawns compacts the clay and leaves footprint dents that last all season, so we time visits to soil conditions, not just the calendar.
Book in March to lock in your preferred week. Spring slots fill before April every year.
What does a spring lawn cleanup include — and why?
Six months of snow cover, freeze-thaw cycles and accumulated debris leave most Ottawa lawns in rough shape by April. The dead leaves you raked in November are now matted into the turf. Sand and salt from the city plows have collected at the curb. The grass itself is flattened, with patches of snow mould, and beds are full of the season's last storm debris.
A proper spring cleanup tackles all of it in one visit. We start with a full property leaf and debris pickup — driveway, walks, beds, lawn — followed by a light dethatch over the worst matted areas to lift the canopy and let air, sun and incoming spring fertilizer reach the soil. Beds get cleared and edged, walkways get a sharp re-cut, and the lawn gets its first mow of the season at proper height (3-3.5 inches) to set the right growth pattern.
Skipping it costs you in three ways: the dead matted layer smothers new growth, snow mould patches spread into healthy areas, and weed seeds that overwintered in debris germinate weeks earlier than they should. A 2-3 hour cleanup in late April saves a season of catch-up.
Most weekly mowing customers bundle it in — start the year clean, then we keep it that way. See weekly cutting →
Spring cleanup FAQ
How long does a typical cleanup take?
2-4 hours for a typical detached-home property. Larger or heavily-treed lots can take longer. We send a per-property quote based on lot size and tree coverage.
Do you haul away the debris?
Yes — included in the price. No piles left at the curb for you to deal with.
Can you also open up beds and prune shrubs?
We open beds and clear debris around shrubs. Pruning we leave to a horticulturist to keep things in our wheelhouse.
What if it snows in late April?
(It's Ottawa — it happens.) We push the schedule until conditions are right. You'll get an updated date.
Lock in your spring date.
