How fertilizer programs work in Ottawa.
Ottawa's clay-heavy soil holds moisture well but locks up nutrients — which is why "feed it, water it" alone rarely produces a tour-grade lawn here. A timed, three-step program respects how cool-season grass actually grows in our climate.
Step 1 — Spring (late April / early May). Slow-release nitrogen wakes the lawn from winter dormancy and pushes the early density that crowds out crabgrass before it germinates. We avoid the common mistake of applying too early — fertilizing frozen or saturated ground just runs nitrogen off into the storm sewer.
Step 2 — Summer (late June / early July). A balanced feed sustains colour and growth through Ottawa's hottest weeks. We adjust the rate down in drought stretches to avoid burning stressed turf — golf-grade slow-release product makes this easy because it self-meters over 6-8 weeks.
Step 3 — Fall winterizer (late September / October). The most important application. Higher potassium hardens cell walls before winter, deeper roots develop in cool soil, and the lawn stores energy for next spring's early green-up. Lawns that get the fall feed look noticeably better in May.
Add core aeration and overseeding (the Complete package) and you're also relieving compaction, breaking up Ottawa's clay layer, and renewing the turf with fresh seed varieties chosen for our climate.
Fertilizer FAQ
Will fertilizer hurt my pets or kids?
We use granular slow-release product. Once watered in (or after a rain), the lawn is safe for pets and children. We recommend keeping off the grass for 24 hours after application — same as a golf course.
Do you spray weed control too?
Ontario regulates lawn pesticide use; we focus on density-based weed control — a thick, well-fed lawn outcompetes most broadleaf weeds. For specific weed pressure (creeping charlie, dandelions), we can recommend a licensed partner applicator.
Do I need to water after each application?
Ideally yes — about 1/2 inch within 48 hours to start the slow-release process. We time visits before forecasted rain whenever possible so nature handles it.
Should I aerate every year?
For Ottawa clay soil, yes — once a year, ideally in fall. The Complete package builds it in. See our core aeration page for details.
Can fertilizer fix bare patches?
Fertilizer alone won't grow grass where there's no seed. The Complete package includes overseeding — fresh seed dropped after aeration so it falls into the holes and germinates with full soil contact.
