Core Aeration for Ottawa Lawns

Ottawa's clay-heavy soil compacts fast. Core aeration pulls thousands of soil plugs across your yard, opening the ground so air, water, fertilizer and overseeded turf can finally reach the root zone.

What's included

  • Full-property mechanical core aeration
  • 2-3 inch soil plugs at ~6" spacing
  • Plugs left to break down (free fertilizer)
  • Optional overseeding immediately after
  • Commercial walk-behind aerator

When we do it

Fall (September) is the prime window in Ottawa — cool soil, reliable rain, and the lawn recovers fast. Pair with fall fertilizer and overseeding for the full reset.

Spring (late April / May) is the secondary window. Best for properties that missed fall or for new builds with heavy compaction.

We don't aerate frozen, saturated, or drought-stressed turf — pulling plugs from rock-hard or muddy soil does damage instead of good.

The Ottawa clay problem

Why is core aeration important for Ottawa clay soil?

Most Ottawa-area residential lots sit on Champlain Sea clay deposits — heavy, dense soil that compacts under almost any pressure. Foot traffic, mowers, kids, dogs, even repeated freeze-thaw cycles all squeeze air pockets out of the soil. Compacted clay blocks oxygen from reaching roots, holds water at the surface (where it evaporates instead of soaking in), and physically prevents new grass from rooting.

Core aeration solves this mechanically. A walk-behind aerator with hollow tines pulls thousands of cylindrical soil plugs out of the lawn — typically 2-3 inches deep at roughly 6-inch spacing. The instant result: thousands of channels for air, water and fertilizer to reach the root zone. The longer-term result: deeper roots, drought-resistant turf, and a lawn that bounces back faster from heat stress.

The plugs themselves are part of the benefit. Left on the surface, they break down within two weeks and return organic matter and microbes to the topsoil — a free top-dressing that improves soil structure over time. Don't rake them up; let them do their job.

Combined with overseeding (fresh seed dropped immediately after aeration), it's the single highest-impact intervention you can make on a tired Ottawa lawn. Read about pairing it with the Complete fertilizer program for full results.

Common questions

Aeration FAQ

Will my lawn look messy afterward?

Yes, briefly — the soil plugs sit on the surface for 1-2 weeks, then break down naturally. Don't rake them. The look is worth it.

Can I do it myself with a rented machine?

You can, but rental aerators are heavier and harder to maneuver than commercial units, and they often pull shallower plugs. The savings disappear once you factor in the rental + transport.

Do you mark sprinkler heads first?

Yes — please mark heads with flags before our visit. We'll also walk the property with you to identify any in-ground hazards.

How soon can I mow after aeration?

Wait until the plugs have broken down — about 1-2 weeks. If you overseed, hold off mowing until the new grass reaches 3 inches.
